The Project

The Yellow Mongoose Project started off with data collection in 2021, with the plan for a long-term field project investigating the ecological and evolutionary aspects for a facultatively social mongoose species. The study site is located in the South African Kalahari Desert at the Kuruman River Reserve where the project monitors 4 up to 8 habituated yellow mongoose groups on a daily basis.

We are looking for 1 volunteer to join our team for 1 year in collecting behavioural data on our habituated individuals and potential habituation of wild individuals at the study site. We are looking for a team member who brings along experience in fieldwork and/or observational data collection. It is beneficial if you have studied (or are studying) animal behaviour, conservation, ecology or any related fields and if you have already completed your master’s degree or have other experiences in independently setting up and conducting research.

What we offer

A volunteer will receive training in field and data skills such as animal handling, radio tracking, observing animals in the wild and working with databases. Accommodation and food will be provided. We also provide basic satellite internet connection with a usage allowance per month (any extra usage would be at the volunteer’s own cost). One return bus trip to the project will be provided (in case of completion of the 12 month stay).
