RECRUITING PhD CANDIDATE – KELP DISPERSAL AND TRANSPORT TO THE DEEP SEA

We are recruiting a PhD student to join a large multidisciplinary project on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) funded under the Transforming Climate Action program (https://www.ofi.ca/programs/transform-climate-action) of the Ocean Frontier Institute at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada. The candidate will be supervised by Professor Anna Metaxas, in the Department of Oceanography at Dalhousie University https://annametaxas.com/, who leads a vibrant group of undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.

The PhD project will focus on carbon transport between kelp beds and the deep sea, using a combination of field work and modelling. The project aims to quantify kelp loss and project transport along coastal regions and to deep offshore basins and canyons. Modelling will be used to project deposition in deep-sea habitats under differing scenarios and to identify locations for further sampling and experiments.

Although the position is funded, the accepted candidate will be expected to apply for national or international scholarships. Start date is either May or September 2025.

If interested, please send a CV, statement of research interests, pdfs of publications (if applicable) and unofficial copy of transcripts to metaxas@dal.ca. Review of applications will begin on 20 January 2025 and will continue until a suitable candidate is found.
