Post-doctoral researcher in aquatic ecology

A postdoctoral position is available to understand the effects of forest watershed stand age and equivalent clearcut area on stream ecosystems throughout Vancouver Island. This research seeks to integrate an ongoing aquatic dataset, including physical (discharge, substrate, canopy cover), chemical (nutrients and dissolved organic carbon), and biological (periphyton, macroinvertebrate, fish) data for which two years of data have been collected, and landscape scale characteristics (determined from landowner information and/or remote sensing). In this role, the candidate will have an opportunity to conduct applied research relevant to forest management decisions. The successful candidate will perform quantitative analyses to evaluate the effects of forest management relative to other landscape-scale characteristics on freshwater responses across 22 3rd order fish-bearing streams along Vancouver Island. Additionally, the candidate will prepare a proposal seeking federal co-funding to extend this research to further support additional field data collection. The candidate will be expected to provide leadership, analysis, project management, publication in peer-reviewed journals, and science communication. The candidate will work with Dr. Rana El-Sabaawi at the University of Victoria (https://elsabaawilab.weebly.com/) and Dr. Ashley Coble at The National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (www.ncasi.org).

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Aquatic Ecology, Aquatic Biogeochemistry, or a related field that supports the analysis of natural resource data with a preference towards aquatic ecology. Experience with stream and river ecology is an asset
  • Exceptional skills in data synthesis and advanced statistical analysis in a relevant area (e.g. spatial analysis, multivariate, or timeseries analysis, etc.)
  • Established, strong publication record and record of completing projects in a timely manner. Previous successful grant writing experience is an asset
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Demonstrated Organization skills, and ability to efficiently manage time and workflow.

Key information for the position:

  • Salary: $65,000 plus benefits
  • Term: 1 year with potential for renewal pending satisfactory performance in first year and availability of funding
  • Location: Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, or flexible.
