PhD position: Current and historical alpine plant community composition in the southwest Coast Mountains
Come join the Socio-Ecological Landscapes Lab at the University of Victoria starting May or September 2025!
The proposed project will investigate current and historical alpine plant community composition in the southwest Coast Mountains under the supervision of Dr. Boulanger-Lapointe, Dept. of Geography, and co-supervision of Dr. Higgs, School of Environmental Studies. The research will involve extensive field work in the alpine to conduct vegetation surveys as well as historical and repeat photographs and remote sensing analyses back in the lab. This position is part of a large interdisciplinary research initiative conducted in collaboration with local partners to identify ecosystems most vulnerable to recreational activities and climate change.
Competitive candidates will have skills and experience in both computational solutions and field ecology; strong statistical and modelling skills; training and interest in shifting dynamics of ecosystems under climate and other environmental changes; and excellent interpersonal and writing abilities. Experience working with Indigenous partners and local stakeholders will be considered an asset.

Compensation: We offer ** ** $40,000 per year for four years as part of a portfolio of funding sources; grant, departmental stipends and TAships. It is expected that successful applicants will be competitive for and apply for external scholarships and fellowship (e.g., NSERC CGS-D).
