PhD OFFER - Restoration of minerotrophic peatlands (fens) at the landscape scale

Program: PhD in Plant Biology
Supervisors: Line Rochefort / Mélina Guêné-Nanchen
Location: Université Laval (Quebec City, QC)
Starting date: As soon as possible
Stipend: $35,000 per year + possibility of supplements of up to $10,000

Project Description: Since the 1990s, the Peatland Ecology Research Group (PERG) has developed a restoration method tailored to ombrotrophic peatlands (bogs) after peat extraction. However, for minerotrophic peatlands (fens), where peat conditions are richer, this approach is not suitable as it does not promote the return of an ecosystem dominated by sedges and mosses. Given the complexity of the hydrological context of fens, a landscape-scale restoration approach is envisioned, combining the creation of macro-topography with progressive rewetting. The recruited student will participate in evaluating this approach for a fen restoration project in Manitoba. Additionally, the student will examine propagation and reintroduction methods of various fen species, both in greenhouse and field settings.

Opportunity:

  • Be part of the new Research Chair in ecosystem restoration (Chaire de recherche en restauration des écosystèmes)
  • Innovation: Contribute to the development of ecological restoration methods.
  • Skills: Enhance your expertise by developing advanced skills in sampling and analyzing ecological data.
  • Network: Collaborate within a dynamic team of graduate students, researchers, professionals, and industry partners.
  • Visibility: Participate in national and international conferences and explore various professional opportunities.

Qualifications required:

  • Interest in peatland research and ecological restoration.
  • Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology, ecology, environmental science, or equivalent.
  • Fieldwork experience and good tolerance to outdoor elements (heat, cold, rain, insects, etc.).
  • Good level of English, basic knowledge of French, an asset.
  • Valid driver’s licence in Québec province.
