MSC AND PHD POSITIONS AVAILABLE IN WHALE CONSERVATION GENOMICS

My laboratory is recruiting one MSc student and one PhD student to work on the conservation genomics of whales. Specifically, the MSc project will be focused on using GT-Seq methods for genotyping fecal samples from North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) for the purposes of population monitoring and linking individual whales to the hormone data obtained from the fecal samples. This work will be conducted in collaboration with the New England Aquarium Right Whale Research Team and the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium. The PhD project will focus on identifying and quantifying the epigenetic effects associated with non-lethal entanglements and male reproductive competition in North Pacific humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). This work will be conducted in collaboration with the Whale Trust. Both projects are lab-based, and do not include a fieldwork component.

The MSc project is fully funded and includes a stipend of $25,000/year (CAD), with the option for additional funds through Teaching Assistant (TA) positions. Funding is available to conduct the research for the PhD project, but not for the salary. Therefore, this position will require the applicant to obtain their own funding for their salary (such as through an NSERC scholarship or other funding options).

For more information on the research in our lab please visit the lab website and/or the website for one of our larger projects. We are located at Saint Mary’s University in beautiful Halifax, Nova Scotia. Please send a letter of interest, CV, and contact information for two academic references to: Tim Frasier (timothy.frasier@smu.ca). Preferred start date is September of 2025. These positions will be advertised until they are filled.
