Thank you for following our efforts to speak out against the proposed legislation in the Getting Major Projects Built in Canada discussion paper!
Context: The federal government has recently released the “Getting Major Projects Built in Canada” proposal (linked here). If this proposal continues to become legislation, the reforms raised in the document will significantly weaken environmental legislation and regulations that protect our lands, water, species, and natural resources, putting Canadian ecosystems at risk (see the CSEE’s statement and the concerns raised by scientists in The Conversation, and La Presse).
Our goal: We want to raise public awareness of this proposal and its possible consequences, and potentially mitigate these actions with a student-led social media campaign. In this campaign, students and postdocs (both domestic and international) make short videos of themselves to express concern over the proposed legislation (see some examples here).
You can join this campaign by:
1- Submit a video of yourself, if you are a researcher (instructions here)
2- Spread the word about this campaign (send this email template to promote this campaign to your department/peers, and print this poster to post within your institution/office).
3- Contact your MPs to voice your concern (MP email template here) and submit your comments regarding the West Coast Oil Pipeline being made a project of national interest by September 18th.
