The ideal candidate will also have a strong interest in fieldwork with wild passerine populations and\u00a0 will study the different eco-evolutionary processes and proximate mechanisms that can cause phenotype\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">environment or genotype-environment correlations. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a heterogeneous environment, four\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adaptive processes may lead individuals\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the same or different populations to\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">utilize an environment that matches their\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phenotype or genotype: 1) local selection <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pressures; 2) Phenotype\/genotype\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dependent habitat choice: animals have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evolved to choose an environment that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">matches their phenotype; 3) Phenotypically <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plastic responses: animals have evolved to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">change their phenotype to match an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">environment; 4) Phenotype\/genotype\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dependent niche construction: animals <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have evolved to modify an environment to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">match their phenotype. Furthermore, intraspecific competition can lead to a non-random and non-adaptive\u00a0 distribution of individuals within the environment, based on their phenotype or genotype. These processes\u00a0 should result in phenotype-environment or genotype-environment correlations, which help maintain trait\u00a0 variation in natural populations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PhD candidate will join a France-Canada research team (Denis R\u00e9ale, UQAM, and Anne Charmantier,\u00a0 CEFE, will co-supervise the project; in collaboration with Claire Doutrelant, C\u00e9line Teplitsky, CEFE). They\u00a0 will benefit from a long-term research project involving 50 years of life history data and over 15 years of\u00a0 behavioural data from four blue tit populations from Corsica and the continent and will develop methods to\u00a0 collect environmental data (e.g., LiDAR and NDVI) around nest boxes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The candidate will be based at the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al (UQAM, Canada), with the opportunity\u00a0 to visit the Centre d\u2019Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive (CEFE, CNRS) in Montpellier (France) once a year.\u00a0 The PhD candidate will participate in field studies in Corsica for three spring seasons. The PhD will be funded\u00a0 for four years by an NSERC-Discovery grant (Can$24,000 per year + $4,000 institutional scholarship per\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">year for the first three years + potential additional funding through a teaching assistantship and institutional\u00a0 fellowships). Priority will be given to applications from candidates who are eligible for excellence fellowships\u00a0 from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) or the Fonds de Recherche Qu\u00e9bec\u00a0 Nature et Technologies (FRQNT). The project can start in either September 2026 or January 2027,\u00a0 depending on whether a study permit needs to be applied for with Immigration Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although UQAM is a francophone university, international non-French speakers are welcome to apply, as\u00a0 they can write their thesis in English. Par ailleurs, la\u00a0 comp\u00e9tition intrasp\u00e9cifique peut conduire \u00e0 une distribution non al\u00e9atoire, et non adaptative, des individus\u00a0 dans l\u2019environnement selon leur ph\u00e9notype ou leur g\u00e9notype. Ces processus devraient aboutir \u00e0 des\u00a0 corr\u00e9lations ph\u00e9notype-environnement ou g\u00e9notype-environnement, qui contribuent \u00e0 maintenir la variation\u00a0 des caract\u00e8res dans les populations naturelles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le ou la candidate fera partie d\u2019une \u00e9quipe de recherche franco-canadienne (Denis R\u00e9ale de l\u2019UQAM et\u00a0 Anne Charmantier du CEFE seront encadrants principaux ; C\u00e9line Teplitsky et Claire Doutrelant du CEFE\u00a0 seront collaboratrices). Elle ou il b\u00e9n\u00e9ficiera des donn\u00e9es d\u2019un projet de recherche \u00e0 long terme (50 ans de\u00a0 donn\u00e9es sur les traits d\u2019histoire de vie et &gt; 15 ans sur les comportements) portant sur quatre populations de\u00a0 m\u00e9sanges bleues de Corse et du continent. Il ou elle d\u00e9veloppera des m\u00e9thodes de collecte de donn\u00e9es\u00a0 environnementales (par exemple, Lidar et NDVI) autour des nichoirs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le ou la candidate sera bas\u00e9.e \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al (UQAM, Canada), avec la possibilit\u00e9\u00a0 d\u2019effectuer des s\u00e9jours annuels au Centre d\u2019\u00e9cologie fonctionnelle et \u00e9volutive (CEFE, CNRS) \u00e0 Montpellier\u00a0 (France). Elle ou il participera \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tude de terrain en Corse pendant trois printemps. Le projet sera financ\u00e9\u00a0 pendant quatre ans par des fonds du CRSNG-D\u00e9couverte (24 000 dollars canadiens par an + $4000 par an\u00a0 de bourses institutionnelles pour les trois premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, auxquels pourront s\u2019ajouter des revenus\u00a0 suppl\u00e9mentaires provenant de postes d\u2019assistant d\u2019enseignement et de bourses institutionnelles). Nous\u00a0 prioriserons les candidatures \u00e9ligibles aux bourses d\u2019excellence du Conseil de Recherche en Science\u00a0 Naturelle et G\u00e9nie (CRSNG) ou du Fonds de Recherche Qu\u00e9bec Nature et Technologie (FRQNT).
