The Department of Biology at The University of Winnipeg invites outstanding candidates to apply for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Biology or a related field with a strong research focus on aquatic biology and freshwater organisms and/or ecosystems. Postdoctoral experience is preferred, and demonstrated teaching ability and evidence of teaching effectiveness are considered strong assets.
The Department of Biology is one of the largest in the University and offers 3 and 4 year B.Sc. degrees, as well as a B.Sc. Honours and a M.Sc. in BioScience, Technology and Public Policy. There are opportunities to supervise Ph.D. students via adjunct appointments at other institutions. The Department is entering an exciting phase of faculty renewal and is based in the state-of-the-art Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex in downtown Winnipeg. Department members are active in a range of areas in health sciences and environmental research.
The successful applicant will make full use of opportunities to collaborate with researchers in the department, at The University of Winnipeg, and in the cluster of associated academic and research agencies in the region, and will be expected to develop an externally funded research program and supervise undergraduate and graduate research students. Depending on expertise, the successful applicant could be asked to teach undergraduate courses in aquatic ecology, organismal or environmental physiology, and/or ecotoxicology, and will have opportunities to develop upper level and/or graduate courses related to their research interests.
There are opportunities for the successful candidate to conduct aquatics research in both the lab and field, and work in a range of systems including (but not limited to) Lake Winnipeg, the Prairie Pothole region and the world-renowned Experimental Lakes Area, all within a few hours of Winnipeg. We are looking for a highly motivated and energetic candidate who will develop a strong, independent but collaborative research program, deliver world-class training for research students, and provide outstanding teaching in the classroom.
Subject to budgetary approval, this position will be effective from July 1, 2017. Salary levels will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
